SoFarSoFresh sat down with 18-year-old DJ Jenno of Toronto for an exclusive interview over the weekend. Jenno grew up in the suburbs of Ajax, Ontario but now resides in downtown Toronto, spinning and mixing tunes whenever he can get a chance. Music has always been at the forefront of his interests when growing up and eventually created a hobby. This hobby was being a DJ, and it started to pay decent cash as he would DJ for parties, special events and high school dances. Most of these crowds are into hip-hop, house, dancehall, soca whether they’re new hits or classics. Clubs are the next big step after he turns 19, so look out Toronto! Check out the interview below:

Hi Jenno, how are you?

I’m good. Trying to catch up on some sleep during this reading week and spinning some records. How are you doing?

Great. Let’s begin.. How did you get into the DJ scene and was there any particular song or artist that inspired you?

Well I used to make small mixes on my laptop as a hobby but some of my friends really pushed me to try to get into it. So I bought a DJ controller just to try it out. Then it was about last year. Growing up as a Filipino, there would be a lot of parties in halls but the DJ would usually be disappointing. I didn’t want that happening to my girl friends who were all turning 18 that were having parties. So a couple of them asked me to DJ and it just grew from there. I wouldn’t say there was a particular artist or song but just the everyday car rides listening to the radio. I loved listening to the mixes by DJ Starting from Scratch or DJ Jason Chambers. I was also starting to get into house music and youtube would have a bunch of videos of house DJ’s working the crowd which looked crazy.

How has growing up in the GTA influenced your musical taste?

One thing that I know about T.O. is that it’s very diverse. That has influenced me a whole lot. I got friends of different backgrounds that would introduce to me to songs of their culture and stuff like that. For example, I was never really taking in soca music until my friend Greg showed me some songs and after that, I loved it. Also, some older heads would introduce me to some classics that would make me go “I remember this tune..”. It’s a crazy mix of genres that have influenced my musical taste and I definitely give the people that I hang out with credit for that. T.O. also showed me that we have a lot of good music coming out of this city whether it’s rappers, DJ’s and producers.

What sounds out of T.O are inspiring you most at the moment?

No doubt I was a big Drake fan in high school and still am. He’s putting Toronto on the map for sure. I also been listening to a lot of Honey Cocaine and The Weeknd lately. Also, I love the DJ’s coming out of the GTA. It’s really inspiring and the music is really diverse. I listen to a lot of mixes from DJ Starting from Scratch, Chambers and Spexxx and that’s a very diverse cast right there. Also, my good friend Boi-1da (producer) was one who really showed me that anything’s possible. He went from making beats in his basement in Ajax to working with all types of artists now. I look up to him like a brother, he would always be at our basketball games because of his cousin. He’s really inspiring.

How would you classify your DJ style?

As of right now, I would classify my DJ style as diverse. It’ really hard to define the way I DJ but I think that’s the best answer for it. I try to break down genre barriers because to me music is music. There’s no reason to stick to one type of genre if you love all types of music. The music that I play definitely represents me as a person though.

What is unique about it?

Well to me, I prefer substance over style. I may not have the newest equipment, but as long as the crowd is loving what I play for them and how I mix songs, that makes me happy. I would play the newest songs but also throw in a few classics that would make the crowd remember what they grew up to. The more diverse you are as a DJ, the more you can adapt to what the audience wants. I would play different types of genres as well such as dancehall, soca, old school hip-hop and even house. It’s funny because s lot of the times, people would be like “How do you know these songs, you’re Asian” or “How do you know these songs, you’re only 18″. In the end, if the crowd has a great time, then I feel like my job is done.

What are some past projects you have done?

I have done a lot of of birthday parties and events similar to that. However, the biggest projects I’ve done are the DLB Fundraiser that I was DJ-ing for alongside 4Korners (Official DJ of the Toronto Raptors) and the recent semi-formal dance for Notre Dame in Ajax.

What skills do you hope to learn with regards to being a DJ and what are your goals?

Over time, I want to improve my scratching, Haven’t really gotten into that yet but I have been practicing. I also want to save up for a pair of CDJ’s or Technics because those are the DJ standards in today’s world. My goal is to eventually start DJ-ing clubs around the GTA then maybe, just maybe travel to DJ. I’ve already been asked to DJ some clubs but I couldn’t due to my age. Also, I want to try to get into producing as well because I have always been interested in making beats too.

Thanks Nick!

Thanks Jenno.

“The corrupt politician is a hideous beast wielding an axe and smoking a cigar.” This is how Zach Johnsen, owner and designer of Zenvironments, sees the world, the ignored side of life that has much to offer to an artist and their weapon of choice. For Zach, the chosen medium is pen and ink, watercolour and mixed media. The frenetic pen lines and designs are accompanied by contrasting splashes of water colour paint in various colours.

Based in Portland, Johnsen works as an Art Director, graphic designer, fine artist and illustrator. He lends his mastery of the micron pen to unique illustrations of ghouls, monsters, misfits and doodles that can’t help but catch your eye. His work has gained much recognition over the past years, and you can find his unique style amongst snowboards, wakeboards, skis, skateboards, apparel, furniture and of course print and publications.

Snowboard designs created for the Cali based skate & snow brand, Arbor Collective.

X Games Apparel

Various wake and kite boards for Slingshot boards

Globally, his work has been recognized in North America, Australia and Europe with obvious expansions as the twisted designs continue to gain popularity. Past projects have included collaborations with K2 Snowboards, Osiris apparel, Homeschool apparel and snow gear, X Games apparel, Syintific Skateboards and much more! Johnsen plans to concentrate on some new medias such as canvas, installations, video and motion graphics. The future looks bright for Johnsen, something unknown within the dark and twisted designs and illustrations.

This is one of the hottest vodkas you will ever sip, and we’re guessing that sip will be small. The Scoville scale is a measurement to determine the spiciness of a pepper. To put this in perspective, on the lower end of the scale are Jalapeños at 3,500 and Cayenne peppers at around 35,000. The peppers thrown in the Naga Chilli Vodka are Naga Jolokia chillies at around 855,000 – 1,050,000 Scovilles (it’s the hottest naturally grown pepper).

You won’t experience upwards of a million Scovilles of heat in this vodka though, as the chillies infuse into the vodka so it just takes the flavour from the Naga Jolokias. Don’t get it wrong, this is still some hot vodka. It tested 100,000 on the Scoville scale so it is comparable to eating a bunch of Habanero peppers. There’s a reason for that skull and crossbones on the bottle..

The description:

We filled a carboy with vodka, and into it we poured so many Naga Jolokia chillies that there was nothing but darkness in that carboy, nothing but darkness. We left the chillies to infuse and impart their flavour, colour and deathly fire into the vodka, and we’ve bottled the result. We are sorry. We are truly sorry.

A review:

I bought this for my husband as a gift. Many’s the time he’s handed me a forkfull of curry saying “Can you taste that and see if it’s hot because it doesn’t seem hot to me?”, only for me to spend the next 20 minutes swearing and gargling milk. I don’t fall for that any more. He took one teeny tiny sip of this, went red, sweated a lot and said “By jingo – that’s hot!”. Apparently it makes a fantastic bloody mary…I will never be brave enough to find out. Well done MofM for creating something my husband actually finds challenging.
